Social Media Image Sizes 2026: Every Dimension in One Cheat Sheet

Profile, cover, feed, story, link-preview and ad dimensions for seven platforms, each checked against the platform's own documentation, including the Instagram grid, YouTube thumbnail and LinkedIn cover changes most cheat sheets still miss.

The short answer

Four shapes cover most posts in 2026: 4:5 portrait for feed images (1080 × 1350 px on Instagram, 1440 × 1800 px on Facebook), 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 px for Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts, 1200 × 630 px (1.91:1) for link previews, and 1000 × 1500 px (2:3) for Pinterest. Profile photos are square uploads shown as circles, and covers crop differently on desktop and mobile, so keep text centered. Every figure below comes from the platform's own help center or ad specs, checked in September 2026.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

1

Instagram's profile grid is 3:4, not square

Since January 2025 the profile grid shows tall rectangles, and Instagram now accepts photos up to 3:4 (1080 × 1440 px), which fills a grid tile exactly. A 4:5 post still shows in full in the feed, but the grid trims about 34 px off each side; a square loses 135 px per side.

2

YouTube thumbnails went 4K

YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 px thumbnails, with up to 50 MB allowed from a computer; the 2 MB limit only applies on phones. Shorts get custom 9:16 thumbnails too. A 1280 × 720 thumbnail still uploads, but it's no longer the recommendation.

3

LinkedIn's company Page cover is 1512 × 256

LinkedIn now lists 1512 × 256 px as both minimum and recommended. Guides quoting 1128 × 191 are out of date, though the shape is the same, so old covers still fit.

4

Facebook stopped quoting exact cover display sizes

The help page no longer lists the 820 × 312 and 640 × 360 display sizes many templates use. It now says the cover is cropped to fit each screen (16:9 on computers, 2.4:1 on phones), and the profile picture covers part of its left side.

Instagram image sizes

Instagram scales photos down to 1080 px wide and crops any ratio outside 1.91:1 to 3:4.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes

Story / Reel1080 × 19209:16Reels accept 1.91:1 to 9:16

For Stories and Reels, Meta advises keeping text and logos out of the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% on each side: about 270 px, 670 px and 65 px on a 1080 × 1920 frame. It's written for ads, but it's a sensible margin for any post.

Meta publishes feed sizes only in its ad specs; they're still the best official guide for regular posts.

X shows a single image uncropped if its ratio is between 2:1 and 3:4; the post sizes above come from its ad specs.

TikTok image sizes

TikTok publishes pixel sizes only for ads; for regular posts the rule is full-screen 9:16, and there's no published profile photo size.

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
Video or photo post1080 × 19209:16Full screen
Ad video, verticalMin 540 × 9609:16Recommended ad shape
Carousel ad image720 × 12809:16Also 640 × 640 or 1200 × 628
Ad profile image98 × 981:1Key detail in the center 66 × 66

TikTok's safe zone varies with caption length, so it offers downloadable templates rather than one number. Keep text clear of the right-hand buttons and the bottom caption.

YouTube image sizes

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
Profile pictureRenders at 98 × 981:1Max 15 MB; shown as a circle
Channel banner2560 × 144016:9Min 2048 × 1152; max 6 MB
Video thumbnail3840 × 216016:9Min 640 wide; max 50 MB from a computer, 2 MB from a phone
Shorts thumbnail2160 × 38409:16Min 640 tall; upload from a computer
Shorts videoVertical or square9:16 or 1:1Up to 3 minutes

The banner catches people out: only large screens show the whole image, and other views crop it. Keep text and logos inside the center 1235 × 338 px (at the 2048 × 1152 minimum), about 1544 × 423 px on a 2560 × 1440 canvas.

Pinterest image sizes

PlacementSize (px)RatioNotes
Standard Pin1000 × 15002:3Taller Pins may be cut off in feeds
Full-screen video Pin1080 × 19209:161:1, 4:5, 3:4 and 2:3 also allowed
Profile coverMin 800 × 45016:9Business accounts only
Profile pictureNot published1:1Upload a square

Pinterest's safe zone for Pins is 270 px top, 65 px left, 195 px right and 790 px bottom. Web uploads cap at 20 MB.

Link preview (Open Graph) image size

One image works everywhere: 1200 × 630 px in the page's og:image tag (see the meta tags guide). Facebook recommends at least that, close to 1.91:1 and under 8 MB; below 600 × 315 the preview shrinks. LinkedIn requires at least 1200 × 627 and under 5 MB. X's large card is 2:1, so a 1.91:1 image may lose a sliver top and bottom. Adding og:image:width and og:image:height lets Facebook render the image on the first share. If the card still won't show on X, the X card validator guide covers the twitter: tags.

Is 1920 × 1080 good for social media?

Only for landscape placements. 1920 × 1080 (16:9) suits a YouTube video or an X post, but Instagram scales it to 1080 × 608 and its 3:4 grid shows just the middle 42% of the width. Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts need the vertical 1080 × 1920. Pick the aspect ratio first, then the pixel size.

Resize an image to the right size

CheckSEO's Social Media Image Resizer center-crops a photo to ten presets (Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and YouTube) or any custom width and height, then exports a PNG without uploading anything. Use the custom size for shapes the presets skip, such as 1080 × 1440 for Instagram's grid or 1000 × 1500 for Pinterest.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard social media image sizes in 2026?

Use 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) or 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) for Instagram feed posts, 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) for Stories, Reels and TikTok, 1200 × 630 px for link previews, and 1000 × 1500 px (2:3) for Pinterest. Upload profile photos as squares, because most platforms display them as circles.

What is the best Instagram post size?

1080 × 1440 px (3:4) if you want the post to fill its profile grid tile, or 1080 × 1350 px (4:5), which shows in full in the feed but is trimmed slightly at the sides in the grid. Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4 and scales photos to 1080 px wide.

What size is a Facebook cover photo?

Facebook says a Page cover photo loads fastest as an sRGB JPG of 851 × 315 px under 100 KB, and it must be at least 400 × 150 px. It is cropped to fit each screen and the profile picture covers part of its left side, so keep text and logos near the center.

What size are the LinkedIn banner and X (Twitter) header?

LinkedIn recommends 1584 × 396 px (4:1, up to 8 MB) for a personal profile banner and 1512 × 256 px for a company Page cover. X recommends 1500 × 500 px (3:1) for headers and warns that up to 60 px can be cropped from the top and bottom, depending on the screen.

Is 1920x1080 good for social media?

Only for landscape placements such as YouTube videos and X posts. Instagram scales photos down to 1080 px wide and its 3:4 grid shows only a narrow center slice of a 16:9 image, while Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts need the vertical 1080 × 1920 version. Choose the aspect ratio before the resolution.
