YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube video URL to preview and download its thumbnail in every resolution YouTube stores it at. Free, instant, no signup.

What this tool does

Every YouTube video has its thumbnail stored at up to five fixed resolutions, from a tiny 120×90 preview up to a full 1280×720 HD image. This tool extracts the video ID from whatever link you paste and shows all five side by side, so you can grab the exact size you need — for a thumbnail redesign reference, a video preview in your own content, or just to save one you liked.

Frequently asked questions

Is this legal / does it need a YouTube API key?

Thumbnails are served from YouTube's own public image CDN at a predictable URL for every video — no login, API key, or scraping involved. This tool just builds that URL from the video ID and lets you preview and download it directly.

Why does one of the resolutions look like a blank grey box?

Max Resolution (1280×720) only exists for videos the uploader provided an HD thumbnail for. If it wasn't provided, YouTube's CDN returns a small grey placeholder instead of a real error — it will still load, it just won't be a usable image. If that happens, use Standard or High Quality instead; those are generated automatically for every video.

Why doesn't right-click → Save Image work directly on the preview?

It usually does, but some browsers block saving images from a different origin than the page. The Download button routes the file through this site's own server first, which sidesteps that restriction reliably.

Does this work for YouTube Shorts?

Yes — paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/...) the same way you would a regular video URL.
